Dear Desiree

Dear Desiree,

Soon you will turn 18 and already you’re in your second year at that European art and design school. I can’t believe how fast the years have gone by. To mark your transition into womanhood, I feel compelled to write you a letter full of wisdom and advice.

Relax. I’m not doing that.

Okay. I did do it. It ended up being six pages and the ratio of wisdom to words was relatively low.

I did spend some time looking at pictures of you from these past 18 years. My intention was to create some piece of art for you, something inspired by you, but after looking back on these 18 years I realized you were the art.

I also realized that over the years there have been relatively few outings in which I did not find a tree and photograph you and/or your siblings in it, unconsciously awarding myself extra points for being able to get you all on the same branch.

I have no words of wisdom to offer you. I can only thank you for all that you’ve taught me over the years.

I love you always and just as you are,

Mom

Be yourself. For your 6th birthday we had a mystery dinner. Your friends dressed as their favorite detective. You went as a rock star.

The light was wrong, the image blurred. Sometimes things don't turn out the way we imagined they would. I see strength, beauty, and a quiet determination.

The ride up was scary as hell. My heart was in my throat. Your hands were in the air.

But the view at the top was priceless. Don't let fear keep you down.

If at first you don't succeed, try again. If on the second attempt you hook Jacob's chin, give yourself space until you nail it.

You climbed that mountain wearing flip flops and a shirt that read "Spirit". That one boy - older than you - wore hiking boots, cried, and had to be carried. Climb that mountain like a girl: with style, grace, and persistence.
